Three generations of speedway racing leads to the rebirth of Baretta Racing.

With his father and Uncle being pioneers in the Australian Speedway scene, it was no question Brett Lacey would follow in their footsteps. Quickly rising through the oval track ranks, Baretta Racing was first established late in 1983 when on returning from a successful racing season in the United States, Brett built his first sprintcar chassis and called it the BARETTA. After a few years of testing and many changes to the design and handling he went on to become the first and only driver to win the Australian Sprincar Championship in a car that he designed and built himself.

Several well known drivers like Nippa Lacey, George Tatnell, David Anderson, John Kelly, Chas Collandro, Stephen Gall all shared success in their Baretta Chassis. A total of 17 Baretta’s were built, 13 for customers and 4 for himself. In 1989 an opportunity arose to purchase the families successful panel beating business so Baretta Racing Chassis was put on hold.
Brett continued racing using many different chassis and with a fair share of feature and major wins, he knew something was missing. After a successful career, he retired from racing in 1998 to concentrate on a demanding business and spend more time with a young and growing family.

Fast forward to 2008 and the Lacey family returned to speedway with son Nick at the wheel. He had been racing motorbikes and go-karts for several years and a year in Formula Ford with his own share of success. Nick showed a lot of natural talent and adapted to sprintcars very quickly, so becoming a 3rd generation Sprintcar driver putting the V26 back on the podium again on many occassions, it appeared the drive for success on the dirt track was genetic.

In 2017 the panel beating business was sold and as Brett and Nick were enjoying being back in the speedway world the decision was made to re-ignite Baretta Racing.
